State Authorization/Licensing
and Private Accreditation

In Washington, state government agencies “authorize” or “license” colleges, universities, and private vocational and technical schools, while private organizations “accredit” them.

Authorization and Licensing

In Washington, the state Higher Education Coordinating Board “authorizes” colleges and universities that offer associate, bachelors, and graduate degree programs.

The state Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board "licenses” private vocational and technical schools that offer diploma or certificate programs in the state.

Authorized and licensed institutions have met the minimum standards required by state law to offer programs in Washington.

Accreditation

Private accrediting organizations “accredit” institutions and their programs. Accreditation is a means of self-regulation and peer review by the educational community, and may cover an entire institution or specific programs.

The accreditation process is voluntary and can take up to 10 years. In general, schools must operate for at least two years before they can apply for accreditation.

The U.S. Department of Education reviews some accrediting organizations and maintains a list of those it recognizes. To view the list and learn more about accreditation, visit the U.S. Department of Education Web site.
