Cost of Instruction
State law requires the Higher Education Coordinating Board to conduct an education cost study every four years to determine how much it costs Washington public colleges and universities to educate students by discipline and education level. The study reports direct and indirect costs for students at the lower-division, upper-division and graduate levels. Policymakers use the cost data to evaluate tuition and fee policies, new enrollment funding, and proposed new degree programs.Key Fact:
- Students and their families are paying a steadily increasing share of the cost of their instruction at public colleges and universities. In 2005-2006, resident undergraduate students at the state research universities paid nearly 52 percent of the cost of instruction, compared with 25 percent in the late 1970s.
